How Does the 2018 Ram 3500 Measure Up to its Ford Competition?
So, you're looking for a heavy-duty pickup to help you tackle those heavy duty loads, and you're wondering which is the best option for you? Allow us to help you sort things out! We know how busy you are, so we took the time to put together this head-to-head matchup of two of the segment's dominant trucks: the Ram 3500 and the Ford F-350. For this comparison, we compared the 2018 Ram 3500 Laramie Crew Cab and the 2018 Ford F-350 Platinum Crew Cab.
Performance and Affordability
The Ram 3500 features a 6.4-liter heavy-duty HEMI® V8 engine that teams with a six-speed automatic transmission to manufacture a best-in-class 410 horsepower and a maximum towing capacity of 16,480 pounds, while the 6.2-liter V8 found in the F-350 teams with a six-speed automatic transmission to manage 385 horsepower and towing capability of about 13,000 pounds -- so you'll get more power from the Ram when you really need to rely on it. The Ram 3500 has a fuel tank capacity of 32 gallons, while the F-350 takes 34 gallons, so you'll save a little money each time you need to stop for a fill-up.
Both behemoths are well-styled to perform their work truck duties, as each features six wheels to facilitate towing and hauling. Both also include standard fog lamps, integrated turn signal mirrors, front tow hooks and privacy glass, and boast the rugged, durable styling you would expect of their respective breeds. One easily noticed difference between the two is that the Ram 3500 comes with standard 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, while the Ford's wheels are 17-inch polished aluminum. Also, the Ram 3500 offers a standard bed liner, while that's an added fee for the already-pricier Ford.
You might be surprised at the luxurious appointments found inside each pickup, as heavy duty cabins can be rather barren at best. Both feature leather-trimmed seating and infotainment systems, though, in our opinion, the Uconnect® system found in the Ram 3500 is easier and more intuitive than the Ford's system. Other standard features in each include wireless phone hookup, power mirrors, premium sound system, satellite radio, power steering and power windows. The Ram does stand out, however, for offering standard heated driver's seat, driver and passenger lumbar adjustments, seat memory and power driver and passenger seats.
Both trucks offer such standard safety features as Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Brake Assist, front, side and rear-airbags, rear-parking aid, tire-pressure monitoring system, traction control and electronic stability control, as well as an anti-theft system. It's important to note, though, that the Ram 3500 includes a rearview camera as a standard feature, while the already more-expensive Ford F-350 makes you pay extra for that driver-assistance.
